Technics at Surrey Teen Tech 2017

Technics at Surrey Teen Tech 2017For the second year running, Technics took part in the Surrey TeenTech event, which is supported by Satro Club. TeenTech is an award-winning, industry-led initiative aimed at helping the β€˜X Factor’ generation understand their true potential and the real opportunities available in the contemporary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) workplace.

Maggie Philbin OBE opened and hosted the event, which was attended by 300 teenage students. Thirty-five companies and organisations supported the day. Split into three zones (Innovation, Insight and Challenge), the students had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with the latest technologies and talk to people who use them in the real world.

We gave the children hands-on experience with a robotic total station, a laser scanner, survey software and virtual reality building models. We explained to them the purpose behind surveying and how it fits into design and construction.

The children were particularly impressed when their image appeared in the laser scan point cloud and also with how they could move around a building using the virtual reality app on the iPad.

Hopefully we have inspired some of them to explore a career in surveying and 3D modeling.
