East Surrey Hospital

Enhancing Infrastructure Resilience at East Surrey Hospital

East Surrey Hospital faced a critical infrastructure concern when a major utility strike on a main water pipe led to the loss of water supply in one of its wards. The incident not only disrupted vital patient services but also highlighted the urgent need for up-to-date and accurate utility plans. The hospital’s existing service schematics were outdated, creating a substantial risk to both routine maintenance and emergency response.

The event served as a stark reminder: in complex, high-dependency environments like healthcare facilities, reliable subsurface information isn’t a luxury—it’s essential.

In response, the hospital commissioned Technics to deliver comprehensive utility and topographical surveys. The primary objective was to produce accurate, reliable service information to support future maintenance, renovation, and emergency works. By providing trusted data, our role was to help the hospital minimise future infrastructure risks and enable safe, uninterrupted care.

The project was delivered in two phases:

Phase 1 focused on the main hospital footprint, including critical clinical areas, utility corridors, and key service routes.

Phase 2 extended to the visitor car park, with future development in mind, including the potential construction of a helipad.

Technics deployed the following methodologies:

  • Topographical Survey
    • Capturing building footprint, levels, hard landscape details, and visible features.
  • PAS 128 Utility Mapping
    • M3P Survey (Phase 1): In-depth mapping across the high-risk clinical zones.
    • M2P Survey (Phase 2): Providing essential data of open areas to support potential site development.

Working within a live hospital setting required close coordination and a sensitive approach. Patient care was prioritised throughout, with survey teams planning activity around clinical operations and access limitations. This collaborative approach ensured no disruption to hospital services while data collection remained thorough and efficient.

Technics delivered updated, clear, and actionable service plans for East Surrey Hospital—data that now underpins both everyday operations and future development strategy. By eliminating uncertainty around underground assets, the hospital can move forward with:

  • Improved safety and emergency response readiness
  • Reduced likelihood of future utility strikes
  • Enhanced planning capability for redevelopment and maintenance

At Technics, our purpose is to reduce risk and enable better decisions. For East Surrey Hospital, we did exactly that—helping protect vital infrastructure and allowing the hospital to focus on what matters most: patient care.
