Career Development – Evan Devereux

Evan joined Technics 11 years ago as a Trainee Utility Surveyor, having made a significant career change from working as a chef. Growing up on a farm, working outdoors felt like a more natural fit, and surveying offered the perfect combination of technical challenge and time in the field.

Over the years, Evan has worked on a wide variety of projects across the UK, including locations and sites of national significance—many of which would have otherwise remained undiscovered. Through dedication and a strong work ethic, Evan progressed through all levels of utility surveyor roles, continually developing both technical skills and industry knowledge.

Most of this development came from hands-on experience and mentorship from colleagues, later supported by formal qualifications, including the QCF Level 3 and Level 5 in Utility Mapping, the Management-level CSCS card, and various work-based training courses.

After seven years in the field—and in part due to a long-term knee issue—Evan transitioned into an office-based role, with full support from Technics. This move allowed a shift in focus toward data processing, team management, and strategic input. Today, Evan, in his role as Head of Utility Geospatial Data, manages the CAD and GPR data processing, oversees the training development program for the utility surveyors and CAD technicians, and supports the Principal Surveyor and Head of Utilities in planning and decision-making.

To further strengthen management capability, Evan completed the ILM Level 3 and Level 5 qualifications in Leadership and Management. These studies have provided a strong foundation in effective leadership approaches, which Evan now applies daily to help the Utilities department grow and succeed.

We spoke with Evan to discuss his recent ILM Level 5 qualification and how it will impact his career with Technics.

Evan, firstly, congratulations on achieving your ILM Level 5 qualification. What inspired you to pursue the ILM Level 5 qualification, and how has it helped shape your leadership journey?

I chose to pursue the ILM Level 5 qualification as part of my commitment to professional growth and development. My goal was to enhance my ability to navigate challenging work situations and deepen my understanding of business operations. I believed this qualification would not only help me become a more well-rounded employee and a stronger leader but also improve my effectiveness in managing various aspects of my role. Additionally, I hoped it would broaden my perspective, enabling me to better understand how others, as well as myself, perceive workplace dynamics and decisions.

What was the most valuable lesson you learned during your ILM L5 studies, and how have you applied it in your role?

The entire course was eye-opening, but the lessons around learning styles stood out as particularly impactful. They made me reflect on how cultural differences, generational gaps, and personality traits can influence an individual’s natural learning preferences. I also realised the importance of setting aside my learning biases to better accommodate others. Moving forward, I plan to apply this understanding by ensuring that any training programs or day-to-day teaching activities I develop incorporate multiple approaches and techniques. My goal is to create learning experiences that cater to diverse needs while achieving the desired outcomes effectively.

Balancing work and study can be challenging — how did you manage your time and stay motivated, and how were you supported?

Balancing work and study was challenging, especially as I’m not the best at completing tasks immediately when they’re set. Towards the end of the course, things became quite intense. However, the teaching sessions hosted by Positive Perspective were a tremendous help. Held face-to-face in a small group setting in an office in Banstead, these sessions gave me ample opportunity to ask questions and deepen my understanding in person, which was invaluable. When it came to writing the essays, I made use of evenings, weekends, lunch breaks, and quieter moments at work to get them done. It wasn’t easy, but I’m proud to have successfully navigated it through to the end.

Were there any specific modules or topics that stood out to you or changed the way you lead?

The deep dive into business finances has made me think differently about how I approach situations, encouraging me to consider their broader implications more carefully. Moving forward, I’ll aim to help others think more critically about how their everyday decisions can influence the bigger picture.

How has completing the ILM Level 5 impacted your confidence and career development?

Completing the ILM Level 5 qualification has boosted my confidence. It has validated that some of my natural day-to-day actions align with recognised management techniques. Additionally, it has given me the ability to approach situations differently and consider varying perspectives, drawing from the knowledge and skills I’ve acquired. From a career development standpoint, having a higher-level official qualification in management will undoubtedly help me take the next step and enhance my career prospects.

What do you think achieving this qualification will mean for you and your career with Technics?

The hope is that it means I am better prepared to tackle challenges at work in a more informed and educated manner. I am also positioned for future progression roles that may arise, enhancing my readiness and competitiveness for career advancement within Technics. Additionally, it demonstrates my commitment to continuous learning and professional development, which I believe will be highly valued by my colleagues and superiors. This qualification not only equips me with practical skills but also boosts my confidence to take on more responsibilities and contribute more effectively to the department’s success.

What advice would you give to colleagues who are considering starting their own ILM qualification?

I would recommend taking on the ILM qualification if you are looking to broaden your career prospects and enhance your interpersonal skills in a professional environment. The course provides a deeper understanding of business practices and influences, which has prepared me well for my role and the challenges that arise. It also supports and refines your natural management style and aspirations. It is a lot of work, mostly completed in your own time, and requires significant personal assessment; feeling comfortable with your leadership and management style is crucial. The end result, I believe, is well worth the effort. The qualification not only equips you with valuable skills but also boosts your confidence and readiness for future career opportunities.
