Promotion – Desktop Utility Reports
Alex Williams is one of the team members who works in the Desktop Utility Reports department for Technics. The Desktop Utility Reporting Department at Technics services an average of nearly 200 projects per month, with sites ranging from individual houses and small businesses up to large-scale infrastructure, including wind and solar farms, cross-country cable routes and new housing developments.
The department’s clients come from a range of disciplines, including small business owners, housing developers, renewables, conveyancers, utility infrastructure operators, and commercial design and architecture. Each client’s bespoke needs are catered for by a range of desktop utility reporting options, tailored to match their individual data needs and timescales.
Alex started his career with us in January 2020. Following his recent promotion, we asked him to provide his feedback on his career to date.
Alex, firstly, congratulations on your recent promotion. Can you share your experience working at Technics so far? What have been some of the key highlights and challenges?
My experience working at Technics has been fantastic. The ability to work from home allowed my partner and me to move out of Surrey and into our first home. It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since I started here – this is the longest I’ve stayed at a job. One of the biggest challenges I faced was when COVID hit, and I had to adjust to working from home while living in a small flat in Guildford. Our bedroom barely had enough space for the dining chair I was sitting on, which made it a bit tricky to balance work and home life!
What does being promoted to Assistant Technical Report Manager L1 and L2 mean to you personally and professionally?
This promotion represents a significant milestone in my career. I’ve never received this level of recognition before, so it feels amazing to be validated and acknowledged in such a meaningful way. It’s rewarding to see my contributions valued, and knowing that I’ve earned the trust to take on more responsibility motivates me to continue giving my best.
How did you feel when you found out about your promotion, and what was your initial reaction?
I was thrilled when I found out about my promotion. It reinforced for me that this is truly the best job I’ve ever had. It also reassured me that leaving my previous job – despite the advice from others – was the right decision, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
What new responsibilities or challenges are you looking forward to in this role, and how do you think it will help you grow?
I’m really looking forward to taking on more management responsibilities for UTR (Utility Reports). One of the challenges I’m excited about is stepping up and being more assertive, something I’ve always struggled with in the past. It’s going to be a great opportunity to develop that side of myself and grow in the role.
How do you see this promotion impacting your long-term career at Technics, and what are your future aspirations within the company?
As I mentioned earlier, this promotion confirms for me that joining Technics was the best career decision I could have made. Looking forward, I’m committed to continuing my professional development here and taking on new challenges as I progress further within the company.
