Technics Careers – Andrew Pettifer
We are thrilled to introduce the latest addition to the Technics Geospatial department, Andrew Pettifer. With a wealth of experience, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Andy to discuss his career highlights and how he can offer valuable support in developing our aspiring surveyors.
What inspired you to pursue a career in surveying?
I started my career as a surveyor at the age of 19, and I’ve been fortunate enough to pursue this passion for over 40 years. Many people may wonder why I’ve never considered changing careers, but I love surveying because every site is different. One day, I could be working in a city, and the next, I could find myself in the middle of the countryside. This profession offers a perfect balance of outdoor and office work, involving travel across the country and interaction with people from various backgrounds. When I began my journey as a surveyor, I had an exceptional mentor who imparted a wealth of knowledge and skills, laying a strong foundation for my career growth.
What unique perspectives or skills do you bring to our team?
I am a professional with over 40 years of experience. I have a wide range of skills and great attention to detail, which is crucial as a surveyor. I enjoy meeting people, listening to their needs, and using the information I gather to deliver solutions. I thrive on challenges and always maintain a positive ‘can-do’ attitude. Additionally, I have experience in management and can support the team. I particularly enjoy mentoring and coaching less experienced surveyors.
Can you share a memorable challenge you faced in your previous role and how you overcame it?
Back in the 1990s, I was asked to conduct an as-built survey of a new swimming pool that was already in use to ensure it met the minimum standards for length in order to host competitions. I knew that using the existing built-in lasers in total stations wouldn’t be accurate enough. After giving it some thought, I decided to set out parallel baselines around the pool on all four sides using a theodolite and a 30m steel tape. Then, I measured from the baselines back to the ends of the pool using a steel tape. To check if each end wall was vertical, I had to put on my trunks and dive underwater with a spirit level. The end result confirmed that the swimming pool met the minimum standards and was suitable for hosting competitions!
How do you envision contributing to the companyβs culture and goals?
I hold trust, integrity, respect, and support as my core values, which are in line with the company’s culture. I strongly believe in the power of teamwork and that we can achieve more together than as individuals. Placing clients and colleagues at the centre of all my actions, I aim to create an environment where people feel valued, respected, and supported. My leadership style is rooted in compassion, and I strive to help others reach their full potential and excel in their work.
What are your thoughts on the future of the Geospatial Industry and its potential impact on our company?
I am enthusiastic about the rapidly advancing geospatial technology. The more we can automate tasks and improve accuracy, the greater our efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity will be. This will result in faster and even better outputs for our clients.
