A Day in the Life of a Trainee Utility Surveyor

At Technics, we are committed to recruiting and training the next generation of surveyors. With this in mind, we are looking to recruit further Trainee Utility Surveyors to our team.

Back in October Alex Janes joined Technics as a Trainee Utility Surveyor, and we’re thrilled that Alex has successfully completed his three month probation period. We thought now would be a good time to catch up with Alex and find out how he’s getting on at Technics…

So Alex, what attracted you to join Technics as a Trainee Utility Surveyor?

I have a friend who is a surveyor and he recommended it to me as a career option. I’ve always been interested in the environment and the industries that surround it, and I also have a keen interest in technology so it sounded like a perfect role for me.

What does a typical day look like in your role?

A typical day is always different ironically! A typical day mostly consists of pulling radar, but being able to go out to various sites all the time keeps things interesting and you’re always learning new skills wherever you go.

What has been the most rewarding part of the role?

The most rewarding part of the role is feeling like part of a team, everyone is very inclusive and friendly. The stay-aways are also pretty good fun!

What has been the most useful advice you have received from more senior team members and why?

The most useful advice I’ve been given so far is to not pick up bad habits and avoid shortcuts in your work – this can often lead to inaccurate information which mean you’ll have to go back to site to correct mistakes.

What advice would you give to other recruits looking to join Technics?

My advice is that if you love the outdoors and don’t mind getting your hands dirty this is the perfect role for you! But be prepared for a lot of driving!

Our Trainee Surveyor roles are perfect for anyone looking to develop a career in the Geospatial industry providing digital data to support UK Infrastructure.
