The Benefits of Training with Technics

Training to become a surveyor with Technics

At Technics, recruiting and training the next generation of emerging talent is not only important for its business but also to the service it provides to its clients. Whether you’re a graduate or looking for a change in career, we offer a training programme that can provide you with the qualifications you need to get in to this exciting industry.

Charlotte Balston joined Technics as a trainee surveyor and one year on is now as a Junior Land Surveyor working with the Land and Building Survey team. We ask her why she chose surveying and what she thinks the main benefits of the scheme are.

Why surveying? I studied several modules at Bournemouth University and it was surveying I found the most interesting – it spurred me on to pursue a career in this sector. Once I graduated I researched training schemes and it was Technics’ that stood out.

What are the main benefits of the training scheme? For me, one of the main benefits was the variety of experience it offered both in the office and onsite. Sites can vary from residential, construction and rural, across the UK giving you a great opportunity to see the country and work with all surveyors at differing levels of experience.

The scheme not only provides you with the opportunity to develop your surveying skills but also your personal skills in a working environment. You get first-hand experience dealing with clients on site, as well as the general public. It’s a great platform to start your career.

All schemes include:

  • 1-2-1’s with your line manager every quarter
  • PDI with the Survey Manager every quarter
  • NRSWA, CSCS, First Aid and site specific Health & Safety training
  • Quality Assurance feedback on every project
  • Work on high profile UK infrastructure projects

What does your day to day role look like? Now, as a junior surveyor my role varies. I can be on site early morning by myself or working in a team with some of Technics’ most senior surveyors, which is a great learning experience. I also take trainees on site with me and encourage them to learn as I did. I particularly enjoy the 50/50 split of site to office time, and the variety of sites I travel to.

Do you have any advice for people looking to get in to the industry? My advice would be to secure relevant work experience that will give you first-hand experience of how varied the role can be. Also, don’t be afraid to give Technics a call if you have any questions about how to get in to the industry as a whole!

What has your experience been like working at Technics? It has been brilliant. They’re a great company to work for, especially as a surveyor starting your career. The support you get, not from just your immediate colleagues but the whole team, from directors to project managers is great – there’s a real sense that they want you to succeed. The quality of the training you receive from the surveyors you assist on site is also very high.

At Technics we thrive in an environment that is sociable, supportive and a lot of fun. So if you would like to talk to us about potential training opportunities contact us on 01483 230 080, email recruitment@technicsgroup.com or pop in for a coffee to meet the team.
