The New Leica C10 Laser Scanner and the benefits for our clients.

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

The new ‘all-in-one” Scanstation C10 delivers faster, more accurate survey points in High-Definition. The Scanstation is much faster than its predecessor, capturing full dome scans up to 10x quicker.   It now takes less than 2 minutes for a typical sized room.

With integrated real-time streaming video it allows our surveyors to select specific structures to survey on site.  With an onboard controller and colour graphic displays, scanned data can be reviewed on site as part of our QA procedures. Our existing GPS SmartAntenna’s can also be attached to the C10 to allow greater flexibility whilst on site.

As with all laser scanners the C10 provides a safer, less intrusive method for surveying complex environments including confined spaces, power stations & highways.

GPS – a brief explanation

Friday, June 19th, 2009

GPS is the acronym for the Global Positioning System. It is a planet-wide satellite navigation and positioning system with applications ranging from in-car “SatNav”, guiding combine harvesters and airliners, positioning oil rigs and weapons guidance systems.

Land Surveyors use it as a tool for precise positioning and also general surveying and mapping methods.

The system is a three dimensional measurement system which uses hand held and more precise survey instruments to receive radio signals from orbiting satellites to determine their terrestrial (surface) position.

GPS was developed by the United States Department of Defense and is managed by the United States Air Force 50th Space Wing located at Schriever Air Force Base near Colorado Springs, Colorado. Since it became operational in 1995 it has been the only fully functional satellite system (GNSS) in the world consisting of a constellation of between 24 and 32 orbiting satellites- allowing for life expectancy and depending on how many are working at the time.

The US also retains the royal veto in switching off some of the signals when they feel like it (selective availability) in order to prevent unscrupulous people from using the guidance system against them. Fortunately they have promised that they won’t do it anymore!

With the rise in tourist applications of GPS and the desire of other continents not to be completely reliant upon US satellites, other positioning systems are developing, though not fully functioning yet. For example the European Galileo, Russian Glonass and recently the Chinese regional Beidou navigation system is being expanded into the Compass Global System. These are now all known by the generic term Global Satellite Navigation Systems (GNSS).

Remaining Positive in 2009

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Despite the constant bombardment of negative TV and national press media, Sitechnics are determined to remain positive and upbeat.

In line with most companies, we have had to look at the total costs of running the business which we have seen as an opportunity to streamline and make our company even more efficient. Previous years’ investment in up-to-date equipment, IT systems and applications and vehicles is really working for us now.

We are one of the very few Survey Companies who have been able to retain their full complement of Managers, Senior Surveyors, Surveyors and Assistant Surveyors. We know our clients are feeling the effects of this recession so we have concentrated on developing a closer and better relationship which will pay dividends for both of us in the future.

Throughout this dramatic economic downturn we have stuck to our core vales of accurate, top quality surveying which in the long run saves our clients both time and money.

Cash is King, Emperor, Dictator, President and Wife. We and you are its slave so we’re going to have to get used to this new regime!
