Following our successful Creative Day in December 2010 we decided to extend the boundaries this time. We hosted the day at the excellent Barnett Hill conference centre in the Surrey Hills area and as usual kicked the day off with bacon rolls and coffee.
We then eased into the working part of the day with a fun ‘show and tell’ session. It’s amazing to find out everyone’s hidden talents and interests. We have enough people that play musical instruments to start a band and enough people into photography to rival the paparazzi outside Rupert Murdock’s house! On the more unusual side one of our guys owns a tank, the tracked type, another is a sharp shooter and one grows chilli plants and bonsai trees.
We followed this by dividing into teams to work on problems and improvement. Each team had to write down as many perceived problems and areas for improvement as they could think of, so long as they were related to the company in some way or the survey profession. The teams then rotated and worked on solutions to the previous teams problems, they then rotated again until each team had worked on each set of problems. This was a great exercise and it generated some good debate, some great ideas and a long task list.
The afternoon session was taken over by international motivational speaker David Thomas. David is a Guinness recorder breaker for memory, (he memorized Pi to 22,500 places!!), a London Times No 1 best selling author and speaks to audiences globally. David spoke about and taught us techniques for speed reading and improving your memory, both of which are useful for everyone’s working and home lives. David has a great sense of humour and easily managed to captivate, amaze and educate us all at the same time.

The day was a great success and enjoyed by all. It is really important to allow everyone time to step back from the business and it proved that each person in the team has a voice and is as important as the next.
Now back to that task list….
