International Speaker at Technics Group Creative Day

July 15th, 2011 by Graham Mills

Following our successful Creative Day in December 2010 we decided to extend the boundaries this time. We hosted the day at the excellent Barnett Hill conference centre in the Surrey Hills area and as usual kicked the day off with bacon rolls and coffee.

We then eased into the working part of the day with a fun ‘show and tell’ session. It’s amazing to find out everyone’s hidden talents and interests. We have enough people that play musical instruments to start a band and enough people into photography to rival the paparazzi outside Rupert Murdock’s house! On the more unusual side one of our guys owns a tank, the tracked type, another is a sharp shooter and one grows chilli plants and bonsai trees.

We followed this by dividing into teams to work on problems and improvement. Each team had to write down as many perceived problems and areas for improvement as they could think of, so long as they were related to the company in some way or the survey profession. The teams then rotated and worked on solutions to the previous teams problems, they then rotated again until each team had worked on each set of problems. This was a great exercise and it generated some good debate, some great ideas and a long task list.

The afternoon session was taken over by international motivational speaker David Thomas. David is a Guinness recorder breaker for memory, (he memorized Pi to 22,500 places!!), a London Times No 1 best selling author and speaks to audiences globally. David spoke about and taught us techniques for speed reading and improving your memory, both of which are useful for everyone’s working and home lives. David has a great sense of humour and easily managed to captivate, amaze and educate us all at the same time.

The day was a great success and enjoyed by all.  It is really important to allow everyone time to step back from the business and it proved that each person in the team has a voice and is as important as the next.

Now back to that task list….

Huf Haus v Technics Group: The rematch

July 14th, 2011 by Graham Mills

Technics Group and our clients Huf Haus recently played in a 6 a side football match. This continues a series of regular games played between the companies.

Team Technics were confident to continue their recent unbeaten run however a determined Huf Haus Team came away with a 5-3 victory. The heavy rain proved to be a main factor during the game with lots of sliding tackles a few injuries and 4 own goals! (That’s our excuse anyway…)

Following the game Huf Haus hosted some well earned drinks and food at their superb offices in St George’s Hill, Weybridge.

John Macintyre, Technics Group Projects Director, said “we have developed an excellent relationship with Peter Huf and his team over many years, it’s great to also spend time with them in a social environment. We’d like to thank everyone at Huf Haus for their kind hospitality and we look forward to hosting another match soon.”

If any other clients would like to compare their football skills, please contact us to arrange a game.

Hart Brown Economic Forum

June 22nd, 2011 by Graham Mills

Last night I attended the Hart Brown Solicitors 7th Annual Economic Forum at Surrey University. There was a great range of speakers starting with Jim O’Neil who is the Chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management. Jim spoke about the developed world markets and the rise of the emerging market countries. This was followed by Jonathan Feroze who is the CEO of Business Monitor International. Jonathan spoke about how they grew their business to a position where they now have clients in 175 countries and again explained how their growth was centred around the Emerging Markets. Steve Coburn from Project Five was the next to speak. Steve explained how he has grown his IT company during the recession and gave his thoughts on how the fast pace of IT change will continue to affect our businesses. Lastly was the very inspirational Sean Spooner. Sean was just 14 when he discovered a gap in the market of his home town of Corby and started a publication called Corby Magazine to fill it. Now aged 15 he is distributing 5000 magazines every quarter. If Sean is typical of that generation UK PLC will have no problems pulling ourselves out of recession.

The event was, as ever, well executed by Hart Brown and gave a excellent opportunity to reflect on where we are in the economic cycle and to share views with the other 400 attendees.

New Building Information Modelling (BIM) Service Launched

June 20th, 2011 by Graham Mills

We are pleased to announce that we now offer a new service – Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the process of generating and managing building data during its life cycle. Traditionally Measured Building Surveys have been delivered as 2D floor plans, elevations and sections with some clients requiring full 3D CAD models. BIM is a further leap forward and the end result is an intelligent 3D building model and linked database.

The BIM model can be created from existing building drawings or from a specifically commissioned survey. The model can be used by all members of the development team and it gives rise to a new level of efficiency and will eliminate many of the uncertainties found during the construction phase of the project.

Laser Scanning Disused Quarry

May 20th, 2011 by Graham Mills

The client request was simple, “can you provide us with a contour model of our site in Guildford”, the challenge was that the site was a sheer sided disused 25m deep chalk quarry. Health and Safety considerations meant that the quarry sides or base could not be accessed by the survey team to take measurements. The solution was to undertake the survey using a Riegl Laser Scanner with a Nikon digital camera mounted on top.  The scanner records up to 122,000 points per second and has a range of 600m whilst being able to achieve a 3mm accuracy.

The Laser Scanning Survey was undertaken in half a day on site, a point cloud was then produced and a contour model derived from that.

To find out more information about how Laser Scanning could benefit your projects and to take a look at the video see our webpage:  http://www.technicsgroup.com/land-surveying-services/3d-laser-scanning#!prettyPhoto/1/
