With the growing congestion beneath our streets mixed with the need to replace or lay new pipes and cables also increasing, Technics Group have developed a new, innovative approach, to determine the best route to take.

We have had the capability to tell you what to expect along your route for many years and although comprehensive, our standard methodology is simply too expensive to employ on long routes.

With this in mind we have partnered with IDS, an Italian radar development specialist, in developing a brand new radar system to help us offer a more cost-effective solution. The new STREAM radar (below) allows a 2m wide swathe to be scanned at 16km/h along a carriageway or open area.

If the area is open then GPS can be used to position the system, allowing kilometres of proposed route to be scanned in a single shift, all without the need for traffic management. Within an area where GPS is not reliable, the radar system is positioned using a robotic total station; even with this method we can achieve 1.5km of full road width (Kerb to kerb) within a city centre.

This unique radar combines 40 channels of 200mhz and 600mhz data over a 2m wide area, giving a coverage which is so comprehensive that artificially created cross-sections, taken from the data, look like they were collected by a hand pushed system.

The data is processed using our newly developed RDxCAD software to create images of the subsurface in a series of depth derived views, allowing features such as chambers, construction changes such as reinforced concrete and even utilities to be seen. Whilst this approach will not generate the same quality of survey that a full blown utility survey will, it will reveal the path of least resistance through the maze of obstacles buried beneath our feet.

Once the results are processed, detected utility positions can be correlated with utility record drawing information to help identify service types. Areas where heavy utility congestion is determined can be quickly earmarked for further investigation and construction changes requiring a change in installation technique identified.
